Celebrating Cyprus’ accession as an Associate Member of ESA
Researchers from the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute participated in the celebration event marking Cyprus’ accession as an Associate Member of the European Space Agency (ESA), presenting CARE-C’s ESA-funded projects, such as META-Sat and World Emission. The event was hosted by the Cyprus Space Office and took place on the 5th of May 2026 in Limassol.
Post-Doctoral Research Fellows Alkistis Pappeta and Marios Panagi had the opportunity to present the Centre’s activities in satellite observations, Earth Observation applications, and atmospheric research, while engaging with key stakeholders in Cyprus, involved in satellite-related activities.
During the event, CARE-C researchers highlighted the Centre’s expertise in the use of satellite observations for atmospheric composition analysis, emissions estimation, and air quality modelling. Through participation in ESA-funded projects such as META-Sat and World Emission, CARE-C contributes to the development of methodologies that integrate satellite data into modelling frameworks, supporting improved monitoring and understanding of emissions and air quality at both regional and global scales.
The researchers also presented CARE-C’s observational campaigns, spanning from the Eastern Atlantic to the Eastern Mediterranean, which provide high-quality reference data for the calibration and validation of satellite instruments onboard ESA Earth observation missions, including EarthCARE and Aeolus. These campaigns combine advanced ground-based lidar systems with UAV-mounted sensors, strengthening the use of satellite measurements in climate and air quality research.
The event provided an important opportunity for CARE-C to demonstrate its contribution to Earth Observation research and strengthen connections with the growing satellite and space research community in Cyprus, following the country’s accession as an Associate Member of ESA.
