Strong participation of CARE-C at EGU General Assembly 2025

Members of CARE-C at the Cyprus Institute participated in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, 2025, which took place at the Austria Center Vienna, in Vienna, Austria, on 28 April- 2 May 2025.

The CARE-C team included PhD students, researchers, technical and administrative staff, who contributed to sessions on atmospheric sciences, climate research, and environmental data and infrastructure.

Poster Presentations:

• PhD student/Graduate Research Fellow Andreas Karpasitis – ‘General atmospheric circulation and precipitation evaluation of next-generation Earth System Models’
• PhD student/Graduate Research Fellow Konstantina Koutroumanou-Kontosi – ‘Investigating the Urban Thermal Environment of a Climate Change Hotspot through High-Resolution Modelling: Case Study for Nicosia, Cyprus’
• PhD student/Graduate Research Fellow Aristotelis Liakakos – ‘Development and Application of the Warm Spell Magnitude Index daily (WSMId) in historical European heatwaves’
• PhD student/Graduate Research Fellow Roubina Papaconstantinou – ‘A dual-platform approach for quantifying methane emissions at site level’

Oral Presentations

• Computational Support Specialist Dr Jose Araya- ‘Use of synthetic time series datasets for quality control of meteorological data’
• PhD student/Graduate Research Fellow Christos Xenofontos – ‘Anthropogenic Ammonia’s Impact on Upper Tropospheric Aerosol Composition and Climate Forcing’
• PhD student/Graduate Research Fellow Anna Zenonos – ‘Development of the First Airborne Tree Inventory for Cyprus and Novel Allometries for Carbon Stock Estimation Using AI Models and High-Resolution Remote Sensing Data’

Additionally, Associate Research Scientist, Dr Maria Kezoudi co-convened a session on ‘The use of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) for atmospheric and climate research’.

Finally, within the context of the ENVRINNOV project, which is coordinated by the Cyprus Institute, Managing Coordinator Marina Papageorgiou and Project Officer- Communications and Dissemination Eleni Zenonos, represented the project at the ENVRI community booth, Mrs Papageorgiou delivered a lunchtime talk about the project, and presented at a training session on ‘ENVRI and Industry’ how can we better collaborate for innovation?’.

The event provided an opportunity for CARE-C team members to share their work, connect with other scientists and professionals, and engage with current developments in environmental research.
