Professor Mihalis Vrekoussis, of CARE-C awarded the special honour of the Berninghausen Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

CARE-C proudly announces that Prof Mihalis Vrekoussis, Adjunct professor at The Cyprus Institute’s Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C), was awarded the Special honour of the Berninghausen Prize for Excellence in Teaching on December 3, 2025.

The Berninghausen Prize for Excellence in Teaching is an annual award, established in 1991 by the University of Bremen (Germany) and the “unifreunde” association, to honour outstanding achievements in university teaching. The award aims to recognise both teaching staff and students for their inspiring, creative and effective instruction, with nominations coming from the university community.

Prof Vrekoussis has more than 25 years of experience in atmospheric chemistry and physics, and more than 110 peer-reviewed publications and 300 presentations in international conferences. This is his first time receiving this award in recognition of his outstanding commitment, enthusiasm and exceptional dedication to research and teaching.

As Prof. Vrekoussis highlighted in his personal accounts, “Teaching is not an obligation but a privilege that allows us to transfer knowledge and to inspire (and get inspired by) the next generation of thinkers and leaders.”

CARE-C would like to express their warmest congratulations to Prof Vrekoussis for this outstanding achievement and highlight his contribution to the scientific community of the Cyprus Institute over the past 14 years.
