CARE-C Representation at the 2025 annual EAC conference

Researchers from The Cyprus Institute’s Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C) actively participated in the European Aerosol Conference (EAC), held in Lecce, Italy, from 1–5 September 2025.

The Aerosol Formation Group (AFG) of the Centre presented two oral talks: Assoc. Prof. Tuija Jokinen gave an overview of the SPring particles In CYprus (SPICY) campaign and its latest updates, and Graduate Research fellow and PhD student Mihai Ciobanu introduced a novel offline method for sampling, measuring and characterising low-volatility vapours in the atmosphere. The group also contributed two posters: research scientist Dr Vijay Kanawade presented rare atypical decreasing mode diameter (DMD) events observed during the SPICY campaign, while PhD student Neha Deot presented findings from the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO)- Ayia Marina Xyliatou (AMX) station data, explorning explain the reasons behind the frequency anomaly of NPF in the region by analysing the chemical nature of ions and ion clusters forming naturally in the local atmosphere.

From the Remote Sensing Group, Graduate Research Fellow and PhD student Alkistis Papetta delivered two oral presentations: “On the Volume-to-Extinction Ratio of Dust” and “Variability of Dust Optical Properties during Severe Dust Events over the Mediterranean.”

Finally, Postdoctoral fellow Dr Elie Bimenyimana of the In-situ Aerosols Group presented a poster on “Cross-validation of methods for quantifying the contribution of local (urban) and regional sources to PM2.5 pollution-Application in the Eastern Mediterranean (Cyprus),” comparing approaches for source apportionment in urban and rural areas of Cyprus.

Participation at EAC 2025 provided CARE-C researchers with an important platform to showcase their latest findings, exchange knowledge, and build new collaborations within the global aerosol science community.
