CARE-C’s Dr Eirini Chrysanthou Nominated for Madame Figaro Women of the Year Award

Dr Eirini Chrysanthou, Postdoctoral Fellow at CARE-C of The Cyprus Institute (CyI), has been nominated for the 2025 Madame Figaro Women of the Year Awards in the category of Scientist/Academic of the Year. Her nomination recognises not only her dedication to advancing scientific research, but also her role as an emerging voice for women in science and innovation.

About Dr Eirini Chrysanthou

Dr Chrysanthou is a Postdoctoral researcher with a background in biostatistics, bioinformatics, and public health. She holds a PhD in Quantitative Biomedicine, funded by the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship, and has studied and conducted research across France, Canada, the UK, Italy, and Cyprus.

Her doctoral work focused on sex-specific approaches in skin cancer genomics, with a strong commitment to promoting sex-stratified research, science communication, and public engagement.

Her Work at The Cyprus Institute

At CARE-C, Dr Chrysanthou works in the research group of Dr Kamil Erguler, focusing on the mathematical modelling of vector-borne diseases, such as those transmitted by mosquitos and sand flies. Her research integrates climate science, data analytics, and disease ecology to explore how climate change is affecting the spread of these diseases in Europe—and what that means for public health policy.

About the Nomination

Dr Chrysanthou’s nomination is based on the findings of her PhD research, which identified—for the first time—sex-specific survival biomarkers in melanoma through a sex-stratified gene expression approach. Her work highlights the importance of sex-aware analysis in biomedical research and the urgent need for equitable inclusion of both sexes in clinical studies, especially for diseases that manifest differently in men and women.

About the Awards

Organised annually by DIAS Media, the Madame Figaro Women of the Year Awards celebrate women in Cyprus who are making meaningful contributions as scientists, innovators, role models, and community leaders. Winners are selected by public vote, and the event supports charitable causes through proceeds from ticket sales.
